With its central keep, parapet walk and pepperpot towers, Château de Villemonteix is the archetypal late medieval castle. It is said to be an elegant château, thanks to its discreet 18th-century exterior fittings, sculpted gargoyles and dovecote.
Its current owner, Pierre Lajoix, has brought it back to life after a period of neglect.
The château's 4 floors and dozen rooms house period furniture, wood panelling, paintings, porcelain (Sèvres, Berry, Limoges)... as well as an exceptional double Pleyel that belonged to Béatrice de Camondo and Léon Reinach, her husband, and a rich collection of tapestries from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, by Aubusson, Felletin, Flanders, Beauvais and Gobelins....
The collection comprises some thirty pieces, including two suites or hangings, one of which is listed as a Monument Historique. It was created to show visitors the diversity of the main weaving centers from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century: Flanders, Ferrara, Beauvais, Gobelins and, of course, La Marche, Aubusson and Felletin.
