The Château d’Arfeuille, a medieval fortress, has belonged to the same family for over six centuries: the Mourins d’Arfeuille (or Morin d’Arfeuille) family.
This historic residence has always been inhabited, and each generation has worked passionately to maintain and enhance it. Originally built as a fortified castle in the 12th century, it was later destroyed and subsequently rebuilt and embellished; the keep and the central part of the castle date from the 15th century, whilst the wing dates from the 18th century.
In the 18th century, Yves and Mayeule d’Arfeuille wished to transform this defensive castle into a pleasure palace; they redesigned the garden and had the dry moats filled in to create a terrace at the rear.
A row of lime trees was planted and a ‘garenne’ (hunting ground) was laid out, consisting of six fan-shaped avenues of deciduous trees. This was completely destroyed by the storm of 1999. Since then, 10,000 trees have been replanted.
Part of the site has been listed as a Historic Monument since June 2011.
