At the Château de Montautre, visit 6000 years of history

Located 10 minutes from La Souterraine, on the border between Creuse and Haute-Vienne, Montautre Castle is a site thousands of years old.

A little history...

Indeed, the site has been occupied since the Neolithic period.

There are numerous remains from the Gallo-Roman period, which, according to tradition, come from a temple dedicated to Mercury (columns, funerary chests, millstone, boundary stone, etc.).

Then, after the Hundred Years' War, the castle was built at the initiative of the Mondin family, recognized as noble by Louis XI in 1461.

It was completed in 1550 with the construction of the staircase tower. This family, originally a simple squire to the King, paid homage to the Baron of Fromental and rose to prominence when François Mondin de Montautre ascended to the court of Francis I, then Henry II, as a gentleman in charge of hunting and the King's vautrais (hunting dogs).

The continued ownership of Montautre by the Mondin family and their direct descendants until the year 2000, the preservation of all external attacks, and the complete preservation of the castle archives since 1403 make it an extremely rich and detailed example of the life of the minor nobility of the County of La Marche.
