In the Castillon Valley in the Haut Couserans flows a mountain stream with clear waters teeming with fish; it is there, on the banks of the Lez in the village of Alas, that this unusual and charming garden is located.
The small village of Alas is located very close to Saint-Girons, on the banks of the river, and it is there, nestled beneath the trees, that you’ll discover strange stone statues depicting unique figures—Aztec or Asian kings, a bust of Napoleon, a small fortified castle, and other original figures.
Everything was built over the years by Robert Mathey, the result of 25 years of work involving stacked stones, cement, and concrete, all transported to a location that is difficult to access.
Robert Mathey worked at Roissy Airport and only came to Ariège for vacations.
His patience and passion have created a place of reverie, serenity, and wonder that charms visitors, and it is along this path leading down to the water’s edge that pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago come to rest.
Directions
From Castillon, take the second left turn toward the village of Alas.
At the entrance to the village, you’ll find a small washhouse on your left.
Take the path that branches off to the left in front of the washhouse and follow it for about a hundred meters. A hiking trail on the right, marked by a sign, will lead you to this surprising spot by the water’s edge.
