The Château de Nexon is a must-see site, thanks to its rich history and traces of its equestrian past. Built in the 17th century, the château remained the property of the Gay de Nexon family until 1983, when it was acquired by the municipality and used as the town hall.
Once past the postern entrance, you enter the château with its inner courtyard featuring the Saint Féréol fountain. On the garden side, the facade with its two circular towers features a sundial topped by a dormer window with geminated bays and a pediment decorated with the Nexon coat of arms.
Damaged during the French Revolution, the interior was refurbished in the 19th century.
Near the château are a dovecote, fountains, orangery and stables, the latter bearing witness to a prestigious equestrian past.
The estate, château, stables and grounds bear witness to the existence of the Haras, created in the 16th century by the owners, which saw the birth of the first Anglo-Arab thoroughbred, making the family one of the greatest horse breeders of their time.
It is also part of the Richard the Lionheart Route, one of the department's must-see tourist routes.
The château's grounds are home to a garden unique in France, with its orchard, labyrinth, floral creations, therapeutic plants and water feature. In 2006, the Jardin des Sens was awarded first prize for “Initiative Citoyenne” by the Association des Journalistes du Jardin et de l'Horticulture.
The park and château grounds are open to the public all year round.
