Johnny, Sylvie, Françoise, Jacques, Eddy, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones—they’ve all posed for his camera…
Since July 2015, Jean-Marie Perier has had his own museum in Aveyron, his adopted home.
Two hundred photographs are on display across seven exhibition rooms.
Jean-Marie Perier was born in Neuilly in 1940.
In 1956, he became an assistant to Daniel Filipacchi, then a photographer at Marie-Claire. He began working for Jazz magazine, Paris-Match, and Télé 7 Jours but had to leave in 1960 to do his military service in Algeria.
From 1962 to 1974, he was the photographer for “Salut les Copains,” rubbing shoulders with all the artists of the 1960s.
He also worked on advertising campaigns, notably for Levi’s and L’Oréal. Starting in 1975, he devoted himself entirely to commercial films in Los Angeles and New York. He shot over 600 commercials for Canada Dry, Coca-Cola, Ford, Nestlé, Bic, Camel, Ford… He also directed feature films for the cinema, notably “Antoine et Sébastien” with François Périer in 1974 and “Sale rêveur” with Jacques Dutronc and Léa Massari in 1978.
He returned to France in 1990 and returned to photography, notably for Elle. It was there that he produced the series “L’univers des créateurs,” which allowed him to rediscover the freedom and imagination in his staging that had defined his style in the 1960s. All the great designers passed before his lens: Saint Laurent, Armani, Tom Ford, Christian Lacroix, Gaultier, Alaïa…
At the same time, he directed documentaries and series for television.
The Jean-Marie Périer Gallery is screening a one-hour film exploring the photographer’s personal life. This captivating documentary reveals little-known aspects of his career and private life through interviews, archival footage, and moving testimonials.
