At once entertaining, cultural and scientific, the Parc de la Préhistoire is truly a unique site offering an original approach to the prehistoric heritage of the Ariège region, one of the richest in Europe.
Spanning more than 13 hectares, it invites visitors - children and adults alike - to relive the origins of mankind and "plunge back into the sources of art".
A maze of sounds, a trail of traces, a hunting panorama, reconstructed caves, lakes and waterfalls offer a return to a past that is both surprising and fascinating.
In our workshops, you'll learn how to hunt, carve flint, light a fire as you would have 16,000 years ago, dig like an archaeologist, or paint on the walls of a real-life cave!
Playful, educational workshops introduce visitors to archaeology, hunting, cave art and camp activities (fire lighting and flint knapping).
These workshops are covered and can be used in all weathers.
The Grand Atelier, a museum dedicated to prehistoric art, features numerous engraved and sculpted artefacts, a panorama of parietal art from every continent, and facsimiles including the giant Salon Noir in the Niaux cave, as it was painted 14,000 years ago.
Visitors will also have the privilege of accessing the "Forbidden Niaux" (Clastres network...) and admiring the drawings of the "Dune des pas", all pieces inaccessible in the Niaux cave.
