The commune of Escanecrabe is located in the Comminges region, 24 km north of Saint-Gaudens, close to the Regional Natural Park of the Ariège Pyrenees. The village is built on a ridge overlooking the Save valley, on its right bank.
Nobody agrees on the origin of the name. For some "escaner" means to kill the goat: was it the inhabitants or the wolf that devoured the poor animals? No one knows!
In any case, Escanecrabe deserved to join the Association of French Communes with Burlesque and Singing Names.
An association founded in 2003 to bring together French communes with toponymic peculiarities, in order to enhance their image.
The description of the coat of arms had to mention the goat: "Azure a goat climbing on rocks, all Argent, on a chief Gules four ears of wheat Or".
Among the monuments to be visited are the church of Saint-Macaire and the chapel of Saint-Sabin.
