Moissac, a mecca of Romanesque art, on the Saint-Jean de Compostelle Route

A stop on the Way of St. James, Moissac is a major center of Romanesque art in France.
It is also a town at the crossroads of major transport routes, both pedestrian and river.
It is home to the Canal de Garonne, an extension of the Canal du Midi, which runs all the way to Bordeaux.
Moissac has also been a major stop on the Way of St. James since the Middle Ages.
The Abbey of Saint-Pierre, founded in the 7th century, whose portal is adorned with a monumental tympanum depicting the “Last Judgment,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This tympanum is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture.
Also remarkable is the abbey's cloister, consecrated in 1100, unique in the world for its state of preservation, its stylistic perfection, its corner pillars, and its galleries decorated with 76 sculpted capitals, 46 of which are historiated.

The cloister and abbey church are also world-famous for their appearance in the film “The Name of the Rose.”

In Moissac, you should also visit the Church of Saint Martin, considered the oldest in France.

Moissac is also home to Chasselas, a white grape that has been the pride of the town since the 18th century.
These were the first fresh fruits to obtain an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) designation in 1971.
