The Museu Casa d'Areny-Plandolit is located in a 17th century manor house in the heart of the village of Ordino. It was the property of a rich aristocratic family that owes its reputation to Dom Guillem d'Areny-Plandolit, baron of Senaller i Gramenet, syndic general of the valleys of Andorra among other functions, and who worked in the iron industry in Andorra.
In the house, don't miss the main hall and the library, two superb rooms housing an impressive collection of old books with leather covers.
A bit of history...
The house of Areny-Plandolit was inhabited until 1950 and then acquired by the Consell General in 1972 to make a museum that was inaugurated in 1984. It is part of the circuit of the rural habitat in Andorra.
Between 1600 and 1900 this house was one of the most famous in the valley of Andorra. The building corresponding to the house was acquired in Ordino in the 17th century. The house, which has been converted several times, contains 22,300 documents, 121 parchments and 139 books. The large library is a real bibliographic treasure with a bibliographic fund of 5,000 monographs. It is the second most important of the National Archives of Andorra. The documents reveal a lot about the economic and political situation of Andorra during several centuries. Objects such as blinds or unique pieces such as certain fabrics contribute to the iconographic wealth of the museum. The house also houses a natural science museum.
The Museu Casa d'Areny-Plandolit Andorran national heritage
Two historical novels have been written about the Areny-Plandolit family: "The Elephant Museum" and "The Last Summer in Ordino". The history of the Areny and Plandolit family and its alliances, as well as its economic activities, are widely explained in the museum. The house of Areny had close relations with the trade. In 1686, Guillem Areny Torres opened a cloth store in Tàrrega and relied on the network of muleteers as the only link with the outside world.
The Areny-Plandolit museum exhibits many objects belonging to the family, including paintings from the 19th century that are unique in the Andorran context. There are also medallions with floral and geometric compositions in blue and ochre tones and romantic bucolic compositions of natural waterfall sites.
The exhibition traces the history of the family in Andorra through the centuries, especially under Carlism, and shows the other possessions of the Areny-Plandolit family, especially in Catalonia. The family paid tithes and was the main taxpayer in Andorra. Around the house there are gardens that belonged to them.
