Created in 2008 by the municipality under the impetus of a handful of passionate founding members, Font-Romeu is home to a museum whose walls are beyond imagination. It is mysteriously located equidistant from Santiago de Compostela and Rome, at the foot of the Ermitage de Font-Romeu.
It all started with the innovative idea of using the natural setting of the forest between Font Romeu and the Hermitage to create a trail of works of art.
Constantly evolving over the past 14 years, this project has become the highest art gallery in Europe, with works reflecting cross-border artistic influences.
New sculptures are unveiled along the way, combining the creative inspiration of artists with the marvellous simplicity of nature.
From the sunrise between two mountains at the bottom of the casino staircase, the starting point of the walk from the town center, to the superb Iron Horse at the highest point of the tour, near the high school sports facilities, the Spider and the Man of Renewable Energies create a novelty to be discovered alongside the works already in place.
Another of the season's original features, the beautiful benches designed by the "chantier d'insertion" using recycled skis, are an artistic and ecological nod to the town's winter activity. Along the way, they invite visitors to take a contemplative break.
Under the aegis of the association's new president, Martine Wojtecki, the Musée sans Murs enjoys the support of generous donors such as Mécène Catalogne. The Font Romeu town council and the integration project contribute to the development and preservation of this extraordinary place.
