The town of Uzerche in Corrèze offers a “Simone Beauvoir” tour, with signs along the route recalling Simone de Beauvoir's writings.
It must be said that Jean-Paul Sartre's partner spent long summer vacations in Limousin.
“We spent the summer in Limousin with my father's family. My grandfather had retired near Uzerche, to the property bought by his father [...],” she wrote in her novel “Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter.”
Throughout her youth, Simone de Beauvoir spent her summers at the Château de Meyrignac in the commune of Saint-Ybard, near Uzerche, where her grandfather had created a “landscaped park” in 1880.
The Simone de Beauvoir Trail
This 4km circuit offers a detour at the foot of the town of Uzerche, on the banks of the Vézère. The starting point is Place de la Petite Gare, at the old railway line. The rest of the route is marked in yellow.
From the reception area of the small station, the marked path through the Garenne du Puy Grolier leads to the old carding mills. Once you cross the bridge over the Vézère, the greenery and water continue on the other bank and lead, under the shade, to the Base de la Minoterie, a nature sports center offering a wide range of activities. The circuit continues along Rue de l'Abreuvoir, which climbs towards the old town. Then you cross the Vézère again via the Pont Turgot bridge to return to the starting point.
At the end of the circuit, you can either return directly to the starting point by crossing the Vézère, or climb up to the town center of Uzerche and its superb architectural heritage.
The route is punctuated with plaques, porcelain and enamels recounting the life and work of Simone De Beauvoir.
