Created more than 20 years ago, the Musée de la Chevalerie is the work of Gilles Alessandri, a medieval enthusiast who decided to share this passion transforming his collection into a museum.
Once housed in the Medieval City of Carcassonne, then in the old town of Narbonne, the Musée de la Chevalerie finally found its place in July 2015 not far from the Canal du Midi, in an old medieval stone house in the small historic village of Villesèquelande, only 15 minutes from the City of Carcassonne.
You will discover there the History of the Knighthood as well as various objects, tapestries, weapons, archery, numismatics and illumination, retracing the life in the time of the knights.
The visits of about one hour, are made with Gilles Alessandri, in medieval costume or with Mr. Jean Nicolas historian in the historical discovery of the Middle Ages, and especially the Cathar period. During this visit, you can be knighted as a knight...
Six themes are proposed:
- From the reign of Clovis to that of Charlemagne with the creation of the rules of the Heavy Cavalry and the first codes of chivalry,
- The Crusades, from Hugues Capet in 987 to the victory of Bouvines in 1214,
- The Crusade against the Cathars,
- The end of the Capetians, the Inquisition and the Knights Templar,
- The Hundred Years' War,
- The Italian Wars, from the reign of Louis XI to the end of the Knighthood in France with the prohibition of tournaments by Medici.
The museum shop offers reproductions of tapestries, cushions, models, as well as medieval jewellery and costumes...
