Maussane, its charm and its olive oil

At the foot of the Alpilles mountain range, in the Baux valley, Maussane is a very pleasant village.

Although located along the ancient Roman road that linked Arles to Aix-en-Provence, Maussane has few remains from this period.

Its history, however, is linked to that of Les Baux-de-Provence, where the inhabitants sought refuge in times of war.

Little by little, Maussane developed and prospered thanks to its abundant springs and fertile land.

By the 1830s, the village had more than 650 hectares of olive groves and 12 oil mills.

Today, Maussane and its neighboring commune of Mouries are the leading producers of olive oil in France. The star of the Olive Tree Route, Maussane has nearly 37,000 olive trees and its two mills, still in operation, produce olive oil of exceptional quality, for which it is renowned.

Maussane also has some beautiful points of interest, such as the 18th-century Sainte-Croix church, the 18th-century Monblan chapel, the 18th-century Saint-Roman castle, the 19th-century Querry castle, the large wash house, the oratories, the Four Seasons fountain, and the Santons museum.
