Seix Castle, a former medieval fortress

An essential part of the Couserans heritage, the Château de Seix consists primarily of two towers, a watchtower, and a surrounding wall.

For a very long time, it occupied a strategic location on the route through three major trans-Pyrenean mountain passes, which served as thoroughfares for people and goods.

Most likely built on the ruins of an ancient medieval fortification—part of a defensive network surrounding the village—Seix Castle bears witness above all to the lives of the people of the Haut-Salat region and to five centuries of occupation and renovations.

Purchased in 1994 by the Community of Communes of the Canton of Oust, it is listed on the inventory of Historic Monuments.

Patiently and meticulously restored, respecting the architecture and decor of centuries past, it has housed the Couserans Valleys Heritage Interpretation Center since August 2005, offering visitors interactive exhibits, a multimedia model, projections, and light shows…

A gift shop also offers local products, toys, and more:

– Knight-themed toys crafted in Contrazy in Couserans by carpenter Jean-Luc Graux, using local wood from the Sainte-Croix-Volvestre forest: sword, bow, arquebus, shield, tabard, quiver…

– “La Georgette,” an innovative, designer cutlery set conceived by Jean-Louis Orengo, an ichnologist and founder of “Pays des Traces” in Saint-Lizier

– A selection of footprint casts is also available.

– Whetstones and nail files made from natural stone from the Saurat quarry, the last remaining natural whetstone factory, located in the Col de Port.

– A selection of historical works and art books published by Le Pas d’Oiseau, a local publishing house

– Catalogs of exhibitions held at the Château

– Château honey, harvested by Max Moré, a beekeeper in Seix
