Built on a rock battered by the waves, on the site of an ancient Roman castrum, the Château de Collioure was constructed between 1276 and 1344 to house the court of the Kings of Majorca. Until 1642, the fortress was occupied by the Spanish and then passed into French hands.
Vauban oversaw the construction of the outer wall and the glacis.
The castle was designated a historic monument in 1922 and remains the last medieval royal fortress in France, along with the Château de Vincennes. It also served as a shelter for hundreds of Spanish Republican refugees, including soldiers from the Republican Army and members of the International Brigades.
Today, owned by the Pyrénées-Orientales Departmental Council, it hosts exhibitions and cultural events.
It is one of Collioure’s symbols and jewels and offers a superb view from its ramparts.
