The Musée du liège de Maureillas-las-Illas is unique in France, and indeed in Europe, for its collection of antique tools and machines. It was created by former cork makers from the commune in 1982. In 1950, half the population was involved in cork production.
Several areas with sound systems enable visitors to discover the world of cork: its ecology, harvesting, value-adding and its many uses, some of which are little-known.
In the museum, you'll find the tools and machines that our forebears used to debark the cork oak in the forest, work the cork and produce the corks. Cork, a central element of the town's heritage, has inspired and continues to inspire many local and national artists, including Ludovic Massé and Eric Marsian, who have made it their preferred raw material. A store offers visitors the chance to purchase cork objects.
A superb late 19th-century Catalan cellar houses works by artists as well as objects and gifts for sale.
