A bunker devoted to culture

The Base sous-marine de Bordeaux was one of five bases built on the Atlantic coast to house flotillas of U Boote submarines during the Second World War.
Construction of this gigantic bunker by the German occupying forces began in 1941 and was completed in 1943,
Organized into eleven cells linked by an internal street, the complex covers an area of 43,000 m2.

The Bunker, a cultural site...

Today, it houses several cultural spaces: an exhibition space devoted to contemporary art, and Bassins des Lumières, a digital art center.

In 1990, the bunker became home to the Conservatoire International de la Plaisance de Bordeaux, combining museum and research center. At the time, it was the world's largest conservatory of pleasure boats. The base's cells housed up to 120 boats. Then, due to a lack of visitors, the site closed its doors in 1997.

Since 2000, the base has hosted temporary exhibitions and monumental works of art. With the installation of the Bassins des Lumières in 2020, this space is now concentrated in the former power station.

Les Bassins des Lumières...

The Bassins des Lumières opened their doors to the public on June 10, 2020, at the instigation of Alain Juppé, then Mayor of Bordeaux.

Les Bassins des Lumières is the world's largest digital art center.

The four water basins are 110 m long, 22 m wide and 12 m high. 90 video projectors and 80 loudspeakers will project images onto 12,000 m2.
