Montmaur Castle was acquired by the Department in 2006. In partnership with numerous organisations involved in local and national cultural life, it is working to showcase this exceptional site.
Centuries of history have shaped the château, from its construction – which likely began in the 13th century – right through to the 20th century, resulting in a place steeped in history. Every room bears the marks of time, featuring artistic works unrivalled in the history of the Hautes-Alpes.
The estate comprises farm buildings (stables, cowsheds, barns, a smithy, a bread oven, etc.) and a curtain wall situated to the west in the section known as ‘La Flamme’. Its grand state rooms, some of which cover 150 m² of floor space, feature French-style ceilings and Renaissance-era gypsum fireplaces. The interior is richly adorned with frescoes, some of which date back to the Renaissance and the 17th and 18th centuries; the plaster columns of the grand staircase are in the Doric, Ionic or even Corinthian styles.
