In 2001, the city of Lavaur acquired the former monastery of the Sisters of Christ, a vast building with gardens located in the heart of the castrum.
The objective was to create a cultural center with a media library, a center for ancient archives and a museum.
Since the closure of its permanent collections some fifteen years ago, the Musée du Pays de Cocagne, which was awarded the Musée de France label in 2002, has continued to enrich its collections.
In this context of renewal, important work has been carried out on the collections (inventory, restorations...), and with the support of the city of Lavaur, an important effort is also made on acquisitions. In fifteen years, the museum's collection has more than doubled!
Purchases, donations and deposits have enriched the existing collections in fields as varied as painting, sculpture, drawing, sacred art, archaeology...
These are unique objects, series of works and sometimes even entire collections, such as the remarkable Puget collection, from the famous
dynasty of organ builders from Toulouse.
In its mission of safeguarding, conserving and promoting public heritage, the museum can count on the support of the Friends of the Museum, thanks to whom more than 60 works have been acquired.
The collections
The museum's collections are based on three main themes: fine arts, sacred art, archaeology...
They go far beyond the simple framework of the community, offering a setting for works of regional and even national interest, such as the very beautiful Puget collection.
