Set in 12 hectares of grounds with century-old trees, between Sauveterre de Béarn and Navarrenx, along the banks of the Gave d'Oloron river, the Château de Laàs, owned by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques General Council since 1981, offers one of the finest collections of decorative arts in Aquitaine and is a very pleasant place to visit. In 1946, Louis and Madeleine Serbat moved their own art collections there.
This 17th-century manor house is home to Aubusson and Gobelins tapestries, paintings by Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, Brueghel, Rubens, Fragonard, as well as remarkable porcelain, earthenware, and furniture, which can be discovered during a guided tour and a stroll through the music room, the smoking room, and the other rooms with carved furniture.
Also worth seeing is the reconstruction of one of Napoleon's bedrooms.
And the park...
The castle's large park, with its century-old trees, invites you to take a stroll and enjoy the magnificent view of the Pyrenees and the Gave d'Oloron, romantic paths, Italian, French and English gardens, exotic gardens dotted with straw huts, a waterfall, a bamboo grove, an outdoor theater...
The walk continues through the orchard, where old varieties of apple, peach, grape, and plum trees are planted...
Five tree houses also welcome visitors...
The comaine is home to the Château des Énigmes, a new kind of leisure park that allows visitors to discover the Château de Laàs estate and its large park, labeled “Ensemble arboré Remarquable” (Remarkable Tree-covered Area), while having fun.
The Château des Énigmes won first prize in the Trophées du Tourisme 64 awards in the Holiday Experiences category!
The magnificent setting of the Château de Laàs park is a spectacle in itself, naturally hosting the annual Festival des Transhumances Musicales, a gathering of traditional folk music.
Stars who have already performed include Maxime Leforestier, Graeme Allwright, I Muvrini, Soldat Louis, Dan Ar Braz, Yannick Noah, Isabelle Aubret... and in 2016 Les Insus and I Muvrini.
You can enjoy a picnic or a family snack during your visit.
