The Château des Milandes, on the banks of the Dordogne river, located in the commune of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, in the Dordogne department, was the refuge of Josephine Baker and her 12 adopted children.
The castle, built in 1489, is nestled at the bottom of the valley, in the heart of the Périgord Noir and on the banks of the Dordogne.
It was owned for a very long time by the de Caumont family until the Revolution.
Joséphine Baker, a famous American magazine leader, spent more than 20 years in the Dordogne.
Today, the château houses a museum of the star's memorabilia and the new owner has renovated the magnificent gardens in memory of the woman who would have celebrated her 110th birthday in 2016.
This vast garden, listed as a Historic Monument and planted with large oak trees, was maintained at the time by 15 gardeners. Josephine Baker even had aviaries installed there and peacocks roamed freely.
Six thousand plants, including 600 rose bushes, have been planted in the park of almost 5 hectares.
About 70 birds of prey live in the castle. Among them are about ten day and night raptors that offer a very playful show.
