Fort du Portalet, a prison for marshals and ministers...

Fort du Portalet is a magnificent site. Built in 1842 under Louis-Philippe to guard the Pyrenean border, it stands against a cliff overlooking the Gave d’Aspe and faces the Chemin de la Mâture.
Tasked with protecting the Somport Pass road against Spanish incursions, it owes its fame to certain political figures…
When the army abandoned the site, the fort became a vacation center; later, under the Vichy regime, Marshal Pétain converted it into a prison.

In 1941, the Marshal sent Léon Blum, Paul Reynaud, Georges Mandel, Édouard Daladier, and Gamelin there.
But history can be cruel at times… In 1945, it was Marshal Pétain himself who was imprisoned in this fort, which he had had converted for his greatest enemies.
He remained there for three months before being transferred to the Île d’Yeu, where he died in 1951.

The Fort Today

It was designated a historic monument on November 30, 2005, for the following reason: “It is of public interest from both a historical and artistic perspective, as it is one of the most accomplished defensive structures among all the fortifications in the Pyrenees, constituting a major milestone in the history of 19th-century fortifications and blending exceptionally well into its natural surroundings.”

In 2013, the Aspe Valley Community of Municipalities received the Vauban Prize from Alain Monferrand, president of the National Vauban Association. This prize, which recognizes either academic research or restoration projects, was awarded for the preservation and rehabilitation of Fort du Portalet, acquired by the local government in 1999.

Since June 2021, a Himalayan-style footbridge has allowed pedestrians to cross from the Chemin de la Mâture to Fort du Portalet.

To ensure visitor safety, tours are available by reservation only through the Tourist Office.
Fort du Portalet is a site that requires visitors to be in good physical condition (numerous steps and a 100-meter elevation gain). Please wear appropriate footwear for walking (sneakers or hiking boots).
