The origins of Le Thor likely date back to the Middle Ages, with the first recorded mention of it as a market town dating to 1125.
In the heart of the town, visitors can admire the magnificent Notre-Dame-du-Lac Church, built in the late 12th century and designated a historic monument.
Another point of interest in the old town center is the Porte de Douzabas, or Porte du Beffroi, the last remaining vestige of the ancient ramparts that once protected the inhabitants, featuring a square tower crowned by a bulbous bell tower.
In addition to the Sorgue River with its Garancine waterwheel—a reminder of a time when the river was used to power madder mills (the root was used to dye the trousers of French infantrymen until 1915)— Le Thor is worth a visit for the nearby Thouzon Hill, just two kilometers away, whose summit features the ruins of the fortified Benedictine priory of Thouzon—also known as the “Château de Thouzon”—and its two beautiful Romanesque chapels, Sainte-Marie and Saint-Pierre.
While the hilltop offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Monts de Vaucluse and Mont Ventoux, at its base, visitors can explore the extraordinary Thouzon caves, discovered in 1902.
But Le Thor is also, according to some, the “Capital of Chasselas” with its golden Chasselas wine.
A village not to be missed…
