A village in the Minervois region, Aigne owes its name to the “Villa d'Annius,” named after one of Julius Caesar's veterans. Aigne is located on a sandstone vein that stretches from Bram in the Aude department to Béziers in the Hérault department.
It has 270 inhabitants spread across the village and its hamlets: Campan, La Prade, Les Mouleyres, Les Tuileries, Plovadi, Son Reve, and Sainte Luchaire.
Its uniqueness lies in its architecture, which is rare for the medieval period.
Aigne is made up of a circulade, a single main street that winds its way to the heart of the village. A “circular village of which the people of Aigne are proud.” A ‘Cagarol’ or “Cagarou” as they like to call it.
“Per veïre lo cagarau, cal totjorn passar per lo même trauc” “To visit the snail, you always have to go through the same hole...”
In the center of the village, you can see the Romanesque-style Saint-Martin church, complemented by Gothic elements and topped with three bells, the most recent of which is decorated and listed as a historic monument. The sacristy is actually a private funeral chapel named Saint-Jean. It houses the tomb of Jean Issanchon de la Rouquette, viguier (magistrate) of the barony of Aigne and La Caunette in 1648.
Aigne is home to many artisans and artists who have set up their workshops here.
Aigne invites you to stroll from the fortified gate to the church of Saint Martin. A change of scenery and authenticity guaranteed...
