Beaulieu sur Dordogne, "the Limousin Riviera

Medieval city built on the right bank of the Dordogne, on the borders of several provinces, Limousin, Auvergne and Quercy, Beaulieu sur Dordogne was nicknamed "the Limousin riviera" thanks to the mildness of its climate, which is favourable to the cultivation of the strawberry.

But one comes there first of all for its remarkable Benedictine abbey church of Saint-Pierre, founded in the 9th century by Rodolphe de Turenne, Archbishop of Bourges, whose portal, comparable to that of Moissac, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art representing the return of Christ at the end of time. It houses a rich treasure, a Virgin and Child from the 12th century, a champlevé enamel shrine from the 13th century and two reliquary arms from the end of the 13th century and a "lantern" reliquary from the 11th century of Byzantine origin.

In the alleys of Beaulieu sur Dordogne, you can admire the facades topped by turrets, decorated with medallions and cherubs, like the house of Adam and Eve...

The Penitents' Chapel and its wall-belfry is another treasure of the city and hosts temporary exhibitions.

Nearby, you can embark on the gabare "L'Adèle et Clarisse" from May to October, to relive the epic of the gabariers who came down to Libourne to deliver their loads of wood for the Bordeaux cooperage.

Beaulieu celebrates every 2nd Sunday of May the Gariguette Festival, a local specialty, and offers a producers' market, a writers' fair, gabare rides and a giant strawberry pie, 900 kilos of fruit for 8m in diameter!
